I normally try to steer clear of politics, but I’ll let it be known that I support Barack Obama. For the past few weeks, I’ve observed the debates and have paid close attention to what both Hilary Clinton and Obama have been saying. My conclusion is that either one would make a great president, however I chose Obama because of the incredible impact that I believe his presidency will have on young African Americans in this country.
Most of my life, I have heard my peers and those younger than me say that there is always going to be a cap to what they can achieve in this country. Truth is, I can’t blame them for believing this. If you watch any tv at all, you’ll see that the media mainly gives props to young African American who they they think are gifted with awesome athletic abilities or musical talent. Young African American actors also tend to be at the bottom of the totem pole.
So based on these observations, where does that leave the rest of us? I guess we are doomed to a 9-5 where no matter what the paycheck says, we are a slave to our jobs. Since we are a slave to our jobs, we can’t achieve anything we want to achieve and might as well give up, right? Not anymore.
Now don’t get me wrong, we still need to be responsible and pay our bills. However, we African Americans, especially the Generation X, no longer have the excuse that we can’t get anywhere in this country. We no longer have to look to entertainers who have no clue what it means to be a good example as role models for success. Change is here. Everytime you start to forget how much you can achieve, go to Google.com and type Barack Obama.
We wanted change and now we have it. On that note, I would like to leave you with this awesome video that a buddy from work told me about. Enjoy and have a blessed day.
